Meet Workye Shallo and her coffee grown exclusively for Notes
We are really excited to announce our participation in the 'One Farmer, One Roaster' project, and the launch of our latest coffee offering from the eponymous Workye Shallo.
Workye owns a small farm in the Yirgacheffe region of Ethiopia. Famous for its complex floral coffees which are grown at altitudes of up to 2,000m, this area is now pioneering this exciting new way of trading coffee – ‘One farmer, One Roaster’.
Normally her coffee cherries get mixed and processed with other local farms. However with the help of a microfinance loan she has now been able to upgrade her equipment – drying tables, warehouse, a micro mill disc pulper – so she can export her coffee as a Single Estate Coffee. The coop assist with the export but Workye can earn more by running her own processing operation.
We’re also doing our bit to make this sustainable by adding $1/kilo to be earmarked for infrastructure upgrades on the farm. That way we hope this will be the first of many exclusive coffees at Notes produced by Workye and her team.
